Fans of famous playback singer Muhammad Rafi are celebrating his 87th birthday today.
Mohammed Rafi was born on December 24, 1924 at Kotla Sultan Singh, a village near Amritsar.According to the historical record, Rafi started singing by imitating chants of a fakir in his village. When his elder brother saw his thirst for music, he took him to Ustad Abdul Wahid Khan for music education. Rafi was invited by All India Radio Lahore station to sing for them.He made his professional debut in the Shyam Sunder-directed 1941 Punjabi film Gul Baloch and the earliest debut in Mumbai film was Gaon Ki Gori in 1945.He is best known for romantic and duet songs, which he playback sings with the technique to mould the voice according to characters of the actor on the screen.In 1944, Rafi moved to Mumbai where he was introduced to some of film producers including Abdur Rashid Kardar, Mehboob Khan and later Naushad.Rafis association with Naushad helped the former establish himself as one of the most prominent playback singers in Hindi Cinema.Rafi’s first song for Naushad was Hindustan ke hum hain for the film Pehle Aap in 1944. The first song for the duo was the soundtrack of the movie Anmol Ghadi (1946).
