(Web Desk) - If you’re looking for relief from Hollywood’s parade of sequels, prequels, remakes and reboots, this weekend’s box office results will be of little comfort.

The remake of early 2000s cult classic high school drama Mean Girls raked in a projected $28 million in domestic movie theaters between Friday and Sunday, according Boxofficemojo.com.

Movies generally need to make twice their budget at the box office to turn a profit, and with a reported budget of $36 million, the new Mean Girls is well on its way to surpassing that threshold.

The film follows a brainiac trying to embarrass and sabotage a group of popular girls. The original, which was written by Tina Fey and directed by Mark Waters, was a modest success in 2004, but has since been elevated by critics and fans as a classic female-led comedy.

Fey co-wrote the screenplay for the remake — which reimagines the story as a musical — and is one of the few stars of the original movie to appear in the new version.

In second place was the latest Jason Statham vehicle The Beekeeper, which made a projected $16.8 million in domestic movie theaters this weekend.

The film is an action thriller similar to previous Statham movies, which usually follow a gruff, win-at-all-costs anti-hero on a quest for vengeance.

Wonka, the prequel to the 1971 classic Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory, displayed some staying power by earning a projected $8.4 million in domestic movie theaters over the weekend.

The film, which features Timothée Chalamet in the title role, overcame a disappointing opening weekend and has now made more than $505 million worldwide.
