April 23rd is observed as the World Book and Copyright Day to shun the act of literary piracy.
The day is also happens to be the birth and death anniversary of the greatest English dramatist, William Shakespeare. A Chinese proverb says: “A book is the garden that one can carry around in one’s pocket”. For centuries books have been the ultimate source of knowledge and entertainment for its purveyors. But the trend of book reading is declining gradually as Internet and other mediums are replacing books. The International Copyright Act of 1891 was the first US congressional act that offered copyright protection in the US to citizens of countries other than the US. Like several other countries Pakistan too has a copyright act but no efforts have been made to implement it in letter or spirit.
