Mehdi Hasan: Reliving the maestro's top Ghazals
Let's have a look at Mehdi Hasan's life and top Ghazals on his 91st birthday.
(WebDesk) – Very few people are remembered in this world long after their demise, and the ones that are remembered are no less than legends in their field. One such personality was the evergreen Mehdi Hasan Sahab, who won over millions all across the world with his supremely soothing vocals. Mehdi Hasan established his name by performing some extremely beautiful Ghazals that are still sung by musicians all over the world.
Born in a small village called “Luna” in Rajhastan, India on July 18, 1927, the great musician came to be known as the “Shehenshah” of Ghazal.
Thankfully for Pakistan, the musician migrated to Pakistan with his family following the rebellious partition in 1947.
Mehdi Hasan landed his first ever musical performance 10 years after partition when he sung on Radio Pakistan in 1957. He started as a thumri performer but he widened his musical range to cater a massive audience. Mehdi Hasan, after surprising at his first ever performance, never looked back and became a legendary name in the field of music soon after.

For his epic performances and legendary Ghazals, Mehdi Hasan was honored with numerous awards. The most prominent amongst them are the Nishan-e-Imtiaz, Pride of Performance Award and the Hilal-e-Imtiaz by the Government of Pakistan.
On what was to be his 91st birthday, Google also honored the legend by displaying his doodle on their main page.

He is one of the few Pakistanis to have been honored with this unique feature. Other renowned personalities to have shared the same honor are namely Ustaadh Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan, Abdul Sattar Eidhi, Madam Noor Jehan and Nazia Hasan amongst others.

To mark his 91st birthday, let’s take a stroll down memory lane and relive some of his most amazing and heart-warming Ghazals that helped him represent Pakistan on various platforms all over the world.
Ranjish Hi Sahi
Perhaps one of the legend’s most famous ghazals of all time, Ranjish Hi Sahi, has been performed by many musicians all over the world. None have, however, been able to reach the level of Mehdi Hasan Sahab. This Ghazal was originally sung by the great Iqbal Bano but it was Mehdi Hasan who made it famous all over the world.
Mujhay Tum Nazar Say
The famous song has been covered by many artists over the years most notable being the recent performance of Ali Zafar. However, none could match the class of the original sung by the maestro. The song was originally sung for the black & white, Pakistani Urdu film, Doraha in the year 1967. The famous Pakistani composer Sohail Rana composed the music of the film.
Rafta Rafta Woh Meri
The song was originally sung for the movie Zeenat which was released in the year 1975 and was composed by Shaukat Hussain Dehelvi also known commonly as Nashad. The famous Ghazal was written by Tasleem Fazli.
