Veteran Bollywood playback singer sang over 1300 songs for numerous films
LAHORE (Web Desk) – Mukesh Chand Mathur was born on July 23, 1923, in Delhi. Hailed as one of the most successful playback singers of the Indian film industry, Mukesh sang almost 1300 songs during a career that spanned over 36 years while winning numerous accolades and entailing appreciation from audiences across the globe.
Mukesh’s singing talent was recognised by Indian actor Motilal Rajvansh who also happened to be a family relative. After receiving singing lessons from Pandit Jagannath Prasad in Mumbai, Mukesh debuted as actor-singer in 1941 film Nirdosh however he kicked off his career as a playback singer in 1945.

Music director Naushad Ali is credited for greatly improving Mukesh’s singing style as the playback singer was able to produce a number of hit songs for Naushad’s movies. He served as ghost singer for veteran Bollywood actor Raj Kapoor as a number of Mukesh’s songs were voiced over Kapoor’s acting. He sung for Kapoor in his first film Neel Kamal released in 1947 which was the beginning of an association which would last till Mukesh’s lifetime.

He got married with Saral Trivedi in 1946. The couple had five children. Mukesh won the National Film Award for Best Playback Singer in 1974 for the song ‘Kai Baar Yun Bhi Daikha Hai’ from the film Rajnigandha whereas won multiple Filmfare Awards for a number of his hit songs. He used to travel around the world and perform in numerous concerts next to renowned singers including Lata Mangeshkar, Mohammad Rafi and Kishore Kumar.

Ik din bik jaye ga
Mukesh breathed his last on August 27, 1976, in Detroit, United States, where he had gone to perform in a concert with Lata. Raj Kapoor was badly hurt by Mukesh’s death and remarked that he lost his soul on the day he (Mukesh) died. Bollywood actor Neil Nitin Mukesh is the grandson of Mukesh.
