NEW DELHI: The holy Kumbh Mela which started on January 14 in Allahabad, got glamourise on Makar Sankranti when Bollywood actress Shilpa Shetty paid a surprise visit there on the first day.
The 37-year-old new mother was accompained by her parents and some family members- Surendra and Sunanda Shetty, who arrived to take a holy dip in the Ganga.
The 55 day long Maha Kumbh Mela that happens once in every 12 years, has a strong religious significance. The word Kumbh which means a pitcher, has its references with the pot (kumbh) which emerged after gods and demons churned the ocean to get amrit . According to Hindu mythology, it is believed that when Vishnu was trying to run away with amrit , he spilled its drops at four places: Allahabad, Haridwar, Ujjain and Nashik. So, it is believed that anyone who takes a dip in the Ganga during Kumbh, will attain moksha.
Seems, even Shilpa desires to attain salvation and therefore, the actress took three holy dips in the cold water of Ganga. The actress did not bring her seven-months-old son, Viaan along with her.
After the holy dip, the actress tweeted, "Took 3 very cold dips, brrrrrrr!! Officially, now I will attain moksh (salvation). Now back in Mumbai, can t wait to hug my son. Long but fruitful day."
Shilpa also took part in a special prayer organised at the camp of Swami Chidananda Saraswati, founder of Rishikesh-based spiritual organisation Parmarth Niketan.
According to sources, the camp was organised to raise awareness about rising pollution in the Ganga.
Along with Shilpa, NRI business tycoon Srichand Hinduja also attended a special prayer organised at the camp.
Rumours say that Bollywood couple Akshay Kumar and Twinkle Khanna are also planning to take a trip to Maha Kumbh soon. And, earlier there were reports that Hollywood actress Catherine Zeta Jones also desires to be visit India for Kumbh.
