Minute's silence in Edgbaston for London attacks victims

Dunya News

The attacks came hours before India met Pakistan in Edgbaston Cricket Stadium

(Web Desk/AFP) – India, Pakistan and the crowd observed a minute of silence before commencement of the big Champions Trophy 2017 clash in Edgbaston on Sunday in wake of the latest terror attacks in London last night claiming at least seven lives.

Police received reports of a van speeding into pedestrians on London Bridge at 10:08pm (2108 GMT) in wee hours of Sunday morning.

These emergency calls were quickly followed by reports of multiple stabbings in the popular Borough Market area on the south side of the bridge.

After the white van crashed into fencing by Southwark Cathedral, knifemen sprinted towards nearby bars packed with revellers enjoying a Saturday night out.

Armed police reacted within minutes and three assailants were shot within eight minutes of the first call to the emergency services.

The three attackers shot by armed officers are all dead, police said. They were wearing what appeared to be explosive vests but were later discovered to be hoaxes.

The attacks came hours before India met Pakistan in Edgbaston Cricket Stadium in a much anticipated match between the two arch rivals.

ICC press release

International Cricket Council (ICC) released a press release on its official website to condemn the attacks and pledge support to the grieving families."Our thoughts are with everyone affected by what has happened in London overnight. The ICC and ECB continue to place safety and security at the ICC Champions Trophy and ICC Women’s World Cup this summer as the highest priority," the statement read.

All team hotels, the ICC reported, went into lockdown and teams, match officials and staff were all quickly accounted for.

"We operate on advice from our Tournament Security Directorate - in conjunction with the ECB and relevant police and security authorities - to ensure that we can deliver a safe and secure event. We will continue to work with authorities over the coming hours and days and review our security in line with the threat levels."

However, the international council stated: "We do not disclose our security details as a matter of policy."
