MASHHAD (Dunya News) - Funeral prayer for Iran's late supreme leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei was offered in the holy city of Mashhad on Thursday, with millions of mourners gathering to pay their final respects in one of the largest public ceremonies held in the country.

The funeral prayer was attended by people from across Iran, including religious scholars, senior government officials, and representatives from various sectors of society.

Streets across Mashhad were filled with mourners, as prayers and tributes echoed throughout the city.

According to Iranian authorities, Ayatollah Khamenei will be laid to rest within the precincts of the shrine of Imam Ali Raza (AS), where all burial arrangements have been completed.

Strict security measures have been put in place, while special administrative arrangements have been made to accommodate the large number of pilgrims and visitors expected to attend the burial ceremony.

Mourners paid tribute to Ayatollah Khamenei's religious and national contributions, pledging to carry forward his mission.

Officials said the burial ceremony is expected to be attended by prominent personalities and visitors from across Iran and abroad.

Earlier, a funeral procession was held in Iraq, where funeral prayer for the late Iranian leader was offered at the shrine of Imam Ali (RA) in Najaf.

His body was later taken in a historic procession to Karbala, where millions of mourners gathered to pay their respects.

Iranian authorities said the funeral programme remained unchanged despite the recent attacks.

The first phase of the funeral ceremonies was held in Tehran, followed by funeral prayers in Qom the next day.

The body was then transported to the Iraqi holy cities of Karbala and Najaf before being returned to Iran for the final burial.
