Gordon Brown sends 500 more troops to Afghanistan

Gordon Brown has announced plans to send 500 more troops to Afghanistan. Addressing the Parliament, Gordon Brown said that it is need of the hour to show better performance in Afghanistan. Afghan and NATO forces must ensure the security of civilians, he stressed. Gordon Brown said that the troops will be sent as long as they have the necessary equipment and 3.5 billion pounds are being spent this year in this regard. He said that British troops in Afghanistan will counter the threat of Al-Qaeda attack on UK. There are currently about 9,000 UK troops stationed in Afghanistan.
