(Web Desk) - In order to participate in the Olympics in Paris, a hockey player made the decision to amputate a portion of his finger.
During a training session in Perth two weeks ago, Australian Matt Dawson, 30, was struck by a hockey stick, severely breaking a digit on his right hand.
His hopes of competing in the Olympics were in jeopardy, and the blow nearly severed the top of his finger.
His injury would take around six months for a full recovery so he would miss the Olympics in France.
Or otherwise if he really want to take part in the competition, his finger would have to be amputated.
Dawson, who plays in defence for Australia, chose the latter.
A surgeon took about an inch off the end of his ring finger on his right hand, just below the top knuckle.
"With all the information I had to make the decision, in a pretty short period of time, I still decided to take it and I can still have a pretty good functioning life with just a little less finger to worry about," he said.
