JI demands raising crop support prices

Summary Liaqat Baloch has supported farmers demands for raising prices of sugarcane, cotton and rice.

He was talking to the Secretary General of the Kisan Board Pakistan, Malik Ramazan Rohari, at Mansoora, who apprised him of the growers’ grievances.Liaqat Baloch said that the production cost of different crops had risen substantially because of the rise in prices of inputs including electricity, diesel, fertilizer and seed but the federal and the provincial governments had not raised the support prices of crops in proportion to that, which seemed to the IMF and World Bank policy. The JI Secretary General said that the government policies were benefiting the privileged classes. The growers were compelled to sell their products on throw away prices but as the crop reached the hands of the mill owners and industrialists, the prices of crops and value added items went up abnormally which only benefited the mill owners and industrialists. The result was the growers did not get due return of their hard labour while the capitalists were minting undue profits.Liaqat Baloch supported the Kissan Board decision to begin a protest movement and to stage a protest in front of the National Press Club, Islamabad, in this respect.
