Officials confirmed the blast took place at Imambargah Khadijah al-Kubra, where a large number of people had gathered for prayers.

According to authorities and hospital administrations, the attacker detonated explosives inside the premises after being confronted by security guards at the entrance. Rescue teams rushed to the site and shifted the dead and injured to multiple hospitals across the capital and neighbouring Rawalpindi.

Eyewitnesses told local media that the assailant first opened fire when stopped at the main gate, which is about 30 metres from the imambargah entrance. Guards attempted to block him, leading to an exchange of fire. The attacker then ran roughly 20 metres inside while prayers were under way and detonated himself among worshippers.

No group immediately claimed responsibility. Police sources said the attack was carried out by terrorists linked to “Fitna al-Khawarij”. Government sources stated that the suicide bomber has been identified and had received militant training in Afghanistan, with multiple cross-border visits reported.
