LAHORE (Dunya News) - An anti-terrorism court (ATC) in Lahore has dismissed Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) leader Dr. Yasmin Rashid’s bail applications in two cases linked to the May 9 violence.

The cases pertain to incidents at Shadman Police Station and the Rahat Bakery arson attack.

ATC Judge Manzar Ali Gill ruled that the bail petitions had become ineffective following verdicts already delivered in the cases.

Dr. Rashid, a former Punjab health minister, had sought bail in both matters from the ATC. However, she has already been handed 10-year prison sentences in each of the two cases. An Anti-Terrorism Court (ATC) in Lahore sentenced eight leaders of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) – including Mian Mehmood-ur-Rasheed, Dr Yasmin Rashid, Ijaz Chaudhry, and Omar Sarfraz Cheema – to 10 years in prison each for their involvement in the Sherpao Bridge arson and incitement case, Shadman Police Station arson case and Rahat Bakery vandalism case related to the May 9 protests.

An anti-terrorism court in Lahore has issued a 93-page detailed verdict in the Shadman arson case, sentencing several senior Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) leaders to lengthy prison terms for their role in the violent unrest of May 9, 2023.

Dr Yasmin Rashid, Mian Mehmood ur Rasheed, Umar Sarfraz Cheema, and Ejaz Chaudhry received a combined total of 35 years’ imprisonment. PTI leaders Aliya Hamza Malik and Sanam Javed were handed five-year sentences each along with fines of Rs100,000. PTI Vice Chairman Shah Mahmood Qureshi was acquitted due to lack of evidence.

The court found that violent attacks on government and military installations nationwide followed the arrest of PTI founder Imran Khan, with the Shadman police station incident forming part of this coordinated unrest.
