LAHORE (Dunya News) – Incarcerated former prime minister and Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) Nawaz Sharif’s medical examination results have shown kidney stones, and doctors have recommended a routine surgery to get rid of them.

The former premier underwent CT scan and ultrasound as well as blood tests on Saturday, a day after he was shifted to the Services Hospital from Kot Lakhpat Jail.

The report of the PML-N supremo’s kidney test has shown stones in his left kidney, while a six-member board of doctors from the Services Institute of Medical Sciences (SIMS), recommended surgery for removal.

Later in the day, Maryam Nawaz, daughter of former PM, along with her husband Captain (R) Safdar and son Junaid Safdar visited Services Hospital and met her father.

Meanwhile, Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PMLN) supporters have set a "Quran Khawani" camp outside the hospital to offer special prayers for rehabilitation of Sharif.

Punjab Chief Minister Usman Buzdar had approved shifting Sharif from the jail to the hospital following recommendations of the medical board.

The former premier has been given a VVIP room in the hospital.

SP Model Town Ali Waseem is in charge of overall security. A Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP), two inspectors and 80 officials are performing duties in one shift.

Surgeon Professor Dr Mahmood Ayaz, medicine specialist Dr Kamran Cheema and Dr Sajid Nisar are included in the medical board.

Chairman board Dr Mahmood Ayaz maintained that a cardiologist will be called if needed. Blood and sugar test of the former premier were held.

A docotor has also been called for ECG. The board has decided to consult the personal physician of Sharif.

Earlier, Punjab’s interior ministry issued directives to shift him from the Kot Lakhpat Jail to the hospital and he is expected to stay there until his medical tests and examination is concluded.

Punjab Information and Culture Minister Fayyazul Hassan Chohan has said that Sharif will be sent bck to jail once his health becomes better.

“He is being provided best facilities in every way. Nawaz is also been given his favourite dishes in jail,” said the minister.

Yesterday, the medical board examined Sharif in the jail and recommended shifting him to the hospital due to his deteriorating health condition.

Earlier on January 28, the Islamabad High Court (IHC) adjourned hearing of a bail petition filed by Sharif in the Al-Azizia reference case on the basis of medical grounds till February 6.

The petition has sought bail and suspension of Sharif’s sentence with a reasoning that he has been suffering from heart and kidney problems along with hypertension.

The court issued notice to the National Accountability Bureau (NAB) and ordered the jail superintendent to submit all medical reports of Sharif on the next hearing.

Earlier, advocate Khwaja Harris submitted the petition together with a medical report that recommended shifting Sharif to a hospital for treatment.

The report - composed by a special medical board that examined Sharif - has mentioned that he has already undergone three heart surgeries.

The petition has pleaded with the court to suspend the accountability court’s verdict till the final decision on the appeal in the Al-Azizia reference case, and grant bail to Sharif on medical grounds.

The accountability court on December 24 convicted Sharif in the Al-Azizia reference and sentenced him to seven years in prison, and acquitted him in the Flagship reference case filed by the National Accountability Bureau (NAB) in Mega corruption scandal.
