LAHORE (Web Desk) – Chaudhry Mohammad Sarwar on Thursday stepped down from his position as Governor Punjab citing inability to deal with broader challenges. Here is a brief timeline of his career as Governor Punjab.
Sarwar expressed wish to become Governor Punjab soon after Nawaz Sharif sworn in as Prime Minister
- July 20, 2013: Ch Sarwar surrenders UK nationality, reaches Lahore
- August 1, 2013: President appoints Chaudhry Sarwar as Governor Punjab on PM Nawaz’s recommendation
- August 5, 2013: Ch Sarwar takes oath as 35th Governor of Punjab
- August 6, 2013: Sarwar vows to bolster trade, business
- February 6, 2014: Peace talks with militants should be result oriented: Ch Sarwar
- March 5, 2014: America, Britain and Europe behind terrorist acts in the country: Governor Punjab
- June 23, 2014: Convinced PAT chief Tahirul Qadri to disembark in Lahore when his Islamabad-bound flight took a detour to Lahore airport over security concerns. Qadri had been in the plane for hours protesting the landing in Lahore instead of destination Islamabad. Sarwar later accompanied Qadri to Jinnah Hospital to visit those injured in Model Town tragedy.

- August 16, 2014: Met Jamaat Islami chief Sirajul Haq to discuss options to ‘normalise’ political situation a day after PTI and PAT started marching to Islamabad. In the same meeting, he said the solution to problems lies in democracy and not in ‘unconstitutional change’.
- August 20, 2014: PM Nawaz summoned Governor Punjab to discuss political situation. The government on same day formed a four-member committee to dialogue with PTI, of which, Chaudhry Sarwar was part of. The government and PTI held several dialogue sessions subsequently.
- September 22, 2014: Following PTI’s former president Javed Hashmi’s allegation that Sarwar had been conspiring against the government with PTI, Ch Sarwar rejected the allegation and demanded Hashmi to apologise.
- On the same day he announced he has no differences with Sharif brothers and that he respects them.
- September 23, 2014: Met MQM chief Altaf Hussain in London to discuss political situation
- On the same day, he sat together with Altaf Hussain in front of media in which MQM chief recommended formation of technocratic government for two years.
- October 5, 2014: Sarwar announced that government’s issues with PAT were partially settled
