UNICEF declares 2014 'devastating year' for millions of children

ISLAMABAD (Web Desk) – United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) declared year 2014 as most adverse for the children worldwide.

Children were exposed to violence, war, atrocities and diseases in addition to being forcibly enslaved. According to the report, up to 15 million were directly entangled in violent conflicts.

Conflict between Israelis and Palestinians spanned over 50 days left 538 children dead, 3,370 wounded and 54,000 homeless in Gaza whereas 1,500 children lost their parents.

"Never in recent memory have so many children been subjected to such unspeakable brutality, children have been killed while studying in the classroom and while sleeping in their beds; they have been orphaned, kidnapped, tortured, recruited, raped and even sold as slaves.” UNICEF director Anthony Lake said.

Globally, 230 million children currently live in countries and areas engulfed in violent conflict, according to UNICEF.

The report affirmed that children in countries like Afghanistan, the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Nigeria, Pakistan, Somalia, Sudan and Yemen were more prone to adversities and would continue to be.
