(Dunya News) – In a bid to raise awareness about the disease, the World Parkinson’s Day is observed on April 11 throughout the world.
The Parkinson’s disease is an age-related progressive disease affecting the brain cells and movements of a patient. The neurodegenerative disease leads to progressive deterioration of motor functions of the body due to the loss of dopamine producing brain cells.
The real onset of the disease takes years with primary symptoms, including tremors, stiffness of muscles, sleeplessness and impaired balance while walking, showing some 10 to 20 years earlier.
However, even if the disease is detected in its primary stages, it has no complete cure.
Speaking to Dunya News, Neurosurgeon Prof. Dr. Rizwan Masood Butt said that there were some basic symptoms of Parkinson’s disease, including involuntary tremor of the hands and body and vibrations on the legs.

Dr. Butt further elaborated the symptoms of the disease saying it may include speech impairment, where patient has difficultly to speak.
“The patient can stay healthy as long as they use their mind and body through various activities and a healthy life style. If they remain inactive the disease will progress rapidly,” said Dr. Butt.
Parkinson’s is an age related disease. People over 50 years of age have more chances of developing it. Once diagnosed, the patient needs to remain busy and exercise regularly.
The disease can be treated through basic medications and physiotherapy which can slow down the progress of the disease but cannot completely cure it.
According to experts, some successful researches have been conducted but more analysis is required before employing these for curing humans.
