Summary The decision came after an embarrassing defeat against Pakistan in CT17 final
(Web Desk) – Indian cricket team coach Anil Kumble has stepped down from his position after the brutal defeat against Pakistan in Champions Trophy 2017 final. His contract was to expire after the tournament and he has himself resigned from the post now.
There were reports of a rift between Indian skipper Virat Kohli and the legend cricketer before Kohli himself rejected the speculations himself. In a meeting with BCCI general secretary Amitabh Chaudhary on Tuesday, he told the Indian cricket board that he would not be able to continue working as the head coach from onwards.
The Indian team had performed well in his tenure as he took the command last year in June. The board wanted him to continue for the tour against West Indies until the new coach is appointed, but he neither wanted an extension nor the contender for the coach job. According to the Indian media, he said there were no problems between him and Kohli and went on with his decision as in contract.
If India decides to tour West Indies without a head coach then it will set a unique precedent. The Kohli XI is expected to reach the WIndies where they will play five ODIs and one T20.
Kumble has also decided to skip the ICC meeting. It is not confirmed yet who will be the next person to coach the Indian cricket team. BCCI was reportedly inviting applications for the job recently.
