CNN did not publish headline suggesting climate change is seasonal

(Reuters) - A screenshot that appears to show a CNN headline telling readers that climate change is seasonal and will return after disappearing over the winter has been fabricated, a spokesperson for the broadcaster told Reuters.

According to the faked screenshot, the Sept. 4 article was headlined: “As temperatures cool this fall, it’s important to remember that climate change will be back next summer.” (here , here and here).

A spokesperson for CNN told Reuters that the image did not show an authentic shot of the company’s website and that it had been fabricated. Reuters could not find a record of any such headline published by CNN.

The fake headline suggested the article was written by sports presenter Amanda Davies and associate producer Ben Morse. They did share a byline on Sept. 4, but the piece covered climate change comments made by Formula 1 driver Sebastian Vettel.

The headline of the real piece read: “Sebastian Vettel believes world needs to ‘rethink our behaviors’ to tackle climate change” (here).

Neither the headline nor the article itself suggested climate change is a seasonal phenomenon.
