ISLAMABAD (Dunya News) – Supreme Court (SC) on Tuesday has constituted a bench to hear National Accountability Bureau (NAB) appeal against ex-Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif, his daughter Maryam Nawaz and son-in-law Captain (r) Safdar’s release in Avenfield reference.

The bench, headed by Chief Justice of Pakistan (CJP) Mian Saqib Nisar, will conduct hearing on the petitions from Wednesday.

It is to be mentioned here that NAB had approached the top court to reinstate imprisonment sentences of Nawaz, Maryam and Safdar in Avenfield reference. The anti-graft watchdog, in its petition, held the stance that Islamabad High Court (IHC) hadn’t reviewed the technicalities of the case and suspended sentences of Sharifs.

Justice Athar Minallah had directed to release Nawaz Sharif, Maryam Nawaz and Captain (r) Safdar over surety bonds worth Rs0.5 million each until final decision on their pleas, the petition told.

Former PM Nawaz Sharif, Maryam Nawaz and Captain Safdar were convicted and sentenced to prison in absentia for ten years, seven years and one year respectively, in Avenfield reference.

Maryam Nawaz and Captain (r) Safdarwere also disqualified from contesting elections for 10 years each. However, they were released from Adiala Jail following IHC’s verdict.

The case stemmed from the Panama Papers leak that disclosed expensive and undeclared property owned by the Sharif family in London.
