Transgender person critically injured in gun attack in Peshawar
The victim was shifted to the Lady Reading Hospital.
PESHAWAR (Web Desk) – A member of Tans Action alliance was critically injured in a shooting incident in Peshawar on Wednesday.
“We don‘t have a good news to share with you. The co-admin of TransAction Page, member of TransAction Alliance and student of Paro is shot in Peahawar few hours ago,” a message was posted on Facebook page.
Victim ‘ photo was posted on the Facbook page of Trans Action Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.
According to police, the incident took place within limits of Chamkani police station. Two suspected gunmen fled on a motorcycle.
The victim was shifted to the Lady Reading Hospital where her surgery continued for five hours.
The Trans Action Khyber Pakhtunkhwa accused the hospital administration of “transphobic and discriminatory” attitude towards the victim.
“I have no words to share the hate and discrimination we faced in hospital today,” a message on the Facebook page stated.
Police have lodged an FIR against the suspects and further investigation is underway.
In Pakistan, the lives of transgender people are marked by harassment, rejection and poverty.
Transgender refers to people who present themselves to the world in a way that does not correspond with their sex at birth. In Pakistan, that usually means people born as men who now dress like women and wear makeup.
They identify as a "third gender" rather than as male or female but usually ask to be referred to by the feminine pronoun since there is no third-gender pronoun.
In recent years the community has gained some government protection.
A Supreme Court ruling in 2011 allowed them to get national identity cards recognizing them as a separate identity — neither male or female — and allowing them to vote.
