The Rat Cafe: Where food and rats go hand in hand

Dunya News

The themed cafe recently opened its doors in San Francisco on Saturday.

(Web Desk) - Ever thought about indulging in an out of this world culinary experience? How about munching on a delicious breakfast surrounded by rodents? Yes, rodents. A new “Rat Café” in San Francisco is already making waves on social media for both its food and the rats.

For most people, the rodent-borne Bubonic Plague may seem disgusting but for a few visionaries based in San Francisco, it proved just the inspiration they were looking for in order to launch the famous city’s latest eateries; The Rat Café. As the name rightly suggests, the guests can sip their coffee, eat their pastries and munch on their cookies while seated at bistro-style tables, nicely draped with red and white gingham tablecloths, all while being surrounded by rats! This limited-run pop-up experience starts at $49.99 per person and includes all-you-can-drink coffee interacting with the friendly rats, as well as admission to The San Francisco Dungeon.

Hosted inside The San Francisco Dungeon, an immersive tourist attraction that takes visitors on a journey through the city s dark past from Alcatraz to the violence and greed of the Gold Rush, the $49.99 breakfast was conceived after some employees began pondering the venue s section on a ‘black death’ plague that struck in the early 20th century.

According to Matthew Gunter of The Dungeon, the main purpose of the cafe is to indulge the guests in an interesting experience that not only lets them enjoy their delicious breakfast in a strange environment; it also allows the guests to get aware of the Bubonic Plague. “Let’s bring the rats to life, let guests actually get a chance to get up close and personal with rats, of course plague-free rats," he said.

Interestingly enough, several dozen guests have already dished out their money to avail the intriguing experience and have a full-proof breakfast surrounded by seven to eight plague-free rats.

Krissi Reeves, a spokeswoman for the Dungeon, said tickets for the July 1 and 8 events sold out in less than an hour. "The rats are pretty darn cute and the people who purchased tickets, I think they have already decided that they’re going to like the rats and not be too scared," she said.
