Government banks are harassing the farmers to pay back the loans.

Farmers belonging to different Indian states have been protested in Tamil Nadu from the past 10 days while carrying skulls of their companions who have committed suicide in the aftermath of one of the worst droughts.

The farmers say that the intense drought has troubled them to a great deal however; government banks are harassing them to pay back the loans.

They have said that if the situation persists, then other farmers will also be forced to end their lives.

State president of South Indian Rivers Linking Farmers Association P Ayyakannu has said that the whole state is undergoing severe famine in the ongoing year which is due to non-provision of water in Kaveri river for irrigation.

The farmers have demanded that their loans should be written off and better compensation should be provided.

Managers of national banks are threatening the farmers of their arrest and land confiscation as a result of which more than 400 farmers committed suicide last year.

The government had also promised them to provide aid but not one was fulfilled.

Union finance minister, Arun Jaitley, has asked the protesting farmers to give him two days’ time to discuss the matter of writing off their loans with the Reserve Bank of India.
