RWANDAN (Web Desk) – Drone-powered ‘Uber for blood’, a step launched by Silicon Valley robotics company Zipline and the Rwandan health ministry, is actually making a serious impact by delivering life-saving medical supplies in Africa, reported BGR.

The initiative has delivered more than 5,500 units of blood over the past year. The blood is being transferred to 12 regional hospitals from a base in the Rwanda.

The drones can travel at a speed of 60 miles per hour and can indicate the authorities when it is near to drop point.

“Some of the biggest, most powerful technology companies in the world are still trying to figure out how to do this. But east Africa is showing them all the way,” Zipline co-founder Kellner Rinaudo told the news outlet. “The work in Rwanda has shown the world what’s possible when you make a national commitment to expand healthcare access with drones and help save lives.”
