LAHORE (Dunya News/ Web Desk) – Free WiFi connectivity extends benefits of internet to not only the ones who cannot afford internet but its ubiquitous availability will be increasingly essential for doing work and managing day-to-day life.

With open access to internet, Punjab government and Punjab Information Technology Board (PITB) aim at bridging the digital divide.
PITB has installed free WiFi routers at 250 points including universities, metro bus stations, railway station, airport and other major places in Lahore.

This service has been particularly appreciated in educational institutions. According to students, this facility has not only made the communication easy, but is also proving to be helpful in studies.

PITB Chairman Dr. Umar Saif has said that this facility will soon be launched in other cities as well.

PITB has banned video streaming and downloading via these hotspots in order to maintain a positive usage of the free facility.

Director Information Technology (IT) PITB Sajjad Ghani said about these free WiFi hotspots, “Users will be authenticated by their ID and mobile numbers, after which they will receive a code via SMS to connect to the internet. We will avoid data hogging by making the internet subscription time barred and are still deciding the exact duration of the subscription as well as which websites will be accessible through this Wi-Fi.”

Talking about the security concerns of users, Ghani said, “We will only keep time and location logs so we are able to check them in case of any terrorist activities. But browsing history and user data will not be saved or stored.”
