Punjab ups fine on traffic violations

Punjab Assembly has passed a bill of increase in fines on violation of traffic laws.

According to the new law, motorcyclist will be fined Rs 200 and car riders will be fined Rs 500 over violation of traffic signal. Similarly, bike riders without helmet will be fined Rs 200.For using mobile phone while driving, motorcyclists will be fined Rs 200, car drivers 500 and bus drivers Rs 1000.During the session, opposition member Shaukat Basra, on a point of order, criticised Nawaz Sharif’s statement regarding military courts in Karachi. Shaukat said that Nawaz Sharif insulted the judiciary by talking about military courts, at which the house echoed with slogans.During debate on law and order, Punjab Law Minister Rana Sanaullah told the House that there were 6208 cases of murder registered, 204 incidents of kidnap for ransom, 22452 robbery attempts and 196 police encounters recorded last year (2011).3015 police personnel were dismissed from service, he added.Fateha Khawani was also held in the House for the late Governor Punjab Salman Taseer.The assembly also passed eight bills including Public Service Commission Bill, Establishment of DG Khan University Bill and Increase in Fines of Traffic Violations Bill.Opposition and government members of Punjab Assembly also had a brawl over Nawaz Sharif’s statement.
