Torrential rains lash Karachi, 8 electrocuted

Heavy rainfall in Karachi has inundated various areas while 8 people have died.

The rain started Saturday afternoon and is still continuing in some areas intermittently. It was a thunderstorm, with lightning. Almost all roads has over two-foot water accumulated on them within no time.Traffic came to a halt due to severe jams across the city.Five people including two women and 3 children were electrocuted at Chuna Bhatti. One person was electrocuted on II Chandrigar Road.Eighteen-year-old Naveed was electrocuted near Model Colony area. One woman was electrocuted in Harronabad.The Met Office says rains are expected to continue for the next 24 hours after which a new system of rain will enter Karachi.The new system of rain is expected to start from September 13.Heavy rainfall has been witnessed in the areas of New Karachi, II Chandrigar Road, Malir Shah, Faisal Colony, Landhi, Quaid Abad, Federal B area, Liaqatabad. Nazimabad, Pak Colony, Soldier Bazar and Gulshane Iqbal.70 milimetres of rain has been recorded in the Karachi Airport area.The rains have caused widespread destruction in rural Sindh where flood victims await relief.An uncountable number of people have become homeless and are forced to live under open sky. The risk of epidemics in flooded areas has increased due to the delay in launch of relief activities.
