Gilani, Karzai agree to adopt common political strategy

Both leaders agree to form a joint Pak-Afghan Peace and Conciliation Commission.

Prime Minister Yousaf Raza Gilani and Afghan President Hamid Karzai held one-on-one meeting on Saturday and agreed to form a common political strategy for peace and stability in the region.The both sides also agreed to form a joint Pak-Afghan Peace and Conciliation Commission for the purpose and also to cooperate in intelligence sharing.The joint commission will work on two levels. Premieres of both the countries, heads of the intelligence agencies, army chiefs, and foreign and interior ministers will comprise the first part while the foreign and interior secretaries, directors of the military operations, and directors-general of military intelligence will form the second part.Gilani and Karzai discussed various issues, especially terrorism and regional situation. The prime minister assured Karzai that Pakistan had no intention to interfere in the internal affairs of Afghanistan. He said that Pakistan wanted a united and stable Afghanistan. Gilani also invited Karzai to visit Pakistan.Karzai told the Pakistani delegation that a good progress has been made in talks with peace-loving Taliban.The Pakistani delegation has reached home.Before leaving for the official tour, Gilani said that Pakistan would cooperate with Afghanistan for peace in the region. He said that Pakistan shared historical and religious relations with the Afghanistan as both were closest neighbours. Gilani said that relations between the two countries were developing for the first time after 2008.This is the first high profile visit of the political and military leadership of Pakistan to Kabul and Gilani’s second visit in four months.According to military sources, both the countries are holding strategic dialogues to evolve modalities for the establishment of the commission. Earlier, Gilani and his delegation was greeted by Afghanistan Education Minister Ghulam Farooq Wardak at the Kabul Airport.
