Although army chiefs selected from senior generals but hardly ever does senior most gets selected

LAHORE: (Dunya News) – The army chiefs are always selected from the senior generals of the army but hardly ever does the senior most army chief get the chance to become Chief of Army Staff (COAS).

When General Ayub Khan became the army chief, he was the fourth in seniority list. General Muhammad Musa was fourth on the list.

General Yahya Khan was the third most senior general when he was made the army chief while General Gul Hassan was also on third number in the list. However, General Tikka Khan was the senior most at the time of his appointment.

General Zia ul-Haq was given the promotion from 8th number but General Aslam Beg was the senior most at the time of his appointment as army chief. Similarly, General Asif Nawaz Janjua was also the senior most.

General Waheed Kakar was the fifth on the list. General Jahangir Karamat was the senior most. General Pervez Musharraf was the third most senior when he was made the army chief.

General Ashfaq Pervez Kayani was given the promotion from the second number and General Raheel Sharif from No 3.

General Qamar Javed Bajwa, who has only today been announced as the next army chief, was fourth on the list.

Talking to Salman Hassan on Dunya News’s program TezTar5, Wajahat S. Khan said that Qamar Bajwa also remained chief of staff in the 10th corps as a brigadier and it is the corps that begins from Rawalpindi to Siachen. “This corps looks after the entire Line of Control, the entire actual line of contact and the Rawalpindi area”, he added, “he has also remained the chief Force Command Northern Areas that looks after the Gilgit-Baltistan (GB) and Baltoro areas. Currently he is the IG of Training and Evaluation as well and thus sits right next to COAS”. He said that it was thus a very interesting decision because the threat from India has risen to a new level.
