Karachi district council adopts resolution to declare Altaf 'traitor'
The resolution demands the PMLN-led federal government to register a treason case against Altaf.
KARACHI (Dunya News) – In the first meeting of the Karachi district council today (Monday), a resolution was unanimously passed to declare Muttahida Qaumi Movement (MQM) chief Altaf Hussain ‘state enemy and traitor’ for his recent anti-Pakistan remarks.
The meeting was chaired by Council Chairman Salman Murad. More than 40 members including opposition’s Jam Abdul Karim and Jan Alam Jamot attended the meeting.
The resolution moved by PPP member Mir Abbas Talpur demands the PMLN-led federal government to register a treason case against the exiled MQM supremo and declare him a ‘traitor’.
Altaf Hussain and his supporters are in hot water ever since they have chanted anti-Pakistan slogans during a protest outside the Karachi Press Club.
Last Friday, the National Assembly passed a resolution strongly condemning anti-Pakistan and provocative speech of Altaf and attack on media houses on August 22.
The resolution moved by Minister for Kashmir Affairs Chaudhry Barjees Tahir termed Altaf’s speech derogatory to the country and an attack on the ideology of Pakistan.
The House also condemned all kinds of crimes, torture, terrorism and anti-Pakistan slogans from any side and demanded severe action against all those involved in it under the law.
Karachi police have already charged the exiled leader of MQM with treason and inciting terrorism.
According to a police report, Altaf chanted "down with Pakistan" and called the country a "bastion of terrorism".
After his speech, security forces have sealed the MQM’s headquarters and razed its several illegal offices across Karachi.
For more than two decades, Hussain has addressed supporters through a loudspeaker linked to his London home telephone. He remains a highly influential figure in Karachi, Pakistan’s economic centre and main port, though observers believe his grip on power is gradually diminishing in his absence and his party is no longer the force it once was.
