LAHORE (Web Desk) - Polling time has finished for the first phase of Local Government Elections 2015 in Punjab and Sindh provinces.

Polling in Punjab was held in Lahore, Faisalabad, Gujrat, Chakwal, Bhakkar, Nankana Sahib, Kasur, Pakpattan, Okara, Lodhran, Vehari and Bahawalnagar districts.

While in Sindh, polling was being held in Sukkur, Khairpur, Shikarpur, Kashmore, Ghotki, Qamber, Larkana, Shahdadkot and Jacobabad.

Voters have started arriving at polling stations in different districts.

Election Commission of Pakistan has announced that the local government elections in Maingan and Balkasar union councils of Chakwal district will also be held today as allowed by the Lahore High Court, Rawalpindi Bench.

District Returning Officer Chakwal Mehmood Javed Bhatti said the ECP had postponed LG elections in five union councils including Saloee, Dandot and Laharr Sultanpur, besides Maingan and Balkasar in pursuance of LHC s earlier order.

However, he said the high court bench on Friday allowed holding of LG elections in Maingan and Balkasar union councils.

The Election Commission has clarified that expiry of CNIC does not invalidate the voters from casting their votes.

Army troops have also been deployed to ensure peaceful and smooth polling in sensitive areas. According to ISPR, the troops will assist law enforcement agencies when and where required.

The voting process started at 7:30 this morning and will continue till 5:30 in the evening without any interruption. However, the voters inside the polling stations will be allowed to cast their votes.

Earlier, the Election Commission issued statements showing numbers of registered voters, polling stations, polling booths and polling personnel for the first phase of local government elections in Punjab and Sindh.

On Thursday, the ECP released a statement showing the number of high sensitive, sensitive and normal polling stations in both provinces.

The statement shows there are 16,266 polling stations in twelve districts including Lahore, Faisalabad, Gujrat, Chakwal, Bhakkar, Nankana Sahib, Kasur, Pakpattan, Okara, Lodhran, Vehari and Bahawalnagar, out of which, 3,551 polling stations have been declared high sensitive.

A total of 8,300 have been declared sensitive and 4,441 polling stations are normal.

Lahore High Court has conditionally allowed media to announce results of local government elections. The LHC ordered that media can announce unofficial results after one hour of end of polling without creating sensation.

The court also directed that the TV anchorpersons will tell the people that these are unofficial results and are not final.

The verdict came on a petition filed against the Code of Conduct for Media issued by the ECP.

The ECP had directed the print and electronic media to show authentic election results officially issued by the presiding officers and returning officers.
