Paris Hilton arrested on cocaine charge

The American socialite Paris Hilton was booked into Clark County Detention Centre on Saturday morning on a charge of possession of cocaine but released shortly after. The 29-year-old was a passenger in a car driven by a friend when officers intervened late last night. Public information officer Marcus Martin said officers stopped the car after they noticed what they suspected to be marijuana smoke coming from it. Hilton was apparently recognized by passers-by and a crowd quickly gathered where the car was stopped. During the search officers found what appeared to be a controlled substance on Hilton and tests showed it was cocaine, Mr Martin said. It is not known how much of the drug was found, Mr Martin added.Two months ago Hilton was arrested during the World Cup in South Africa for marijuana possession.She and a friend were accused of possessing the drug at the Brazil v the Netherlands quarter-final, but the charges were later dropped. She was also reportedly questioned by police at an airport in Corsica a few weeks later on similar grounds. In 2007 the reality TV star spent 23 days in jail for driving under the influence of alcohol.
