Kim Davis told court it was against her religious beliefs to issue licenses to same-sex couples

WASHINGTON (AFP) - A Kentucky county clerk who refused to issue marriage licenses to same-sex couples was ordered to jail Thursday for contempt of court, US media reported.

Kim Davis, who has refused to yield despite a US Supreme Court ruling upholding the right of gays to marry, told the court it was against her religious beliefs to issue licenses to same-sex couples.

"My conscience will not allow me," she was quoted as saying by ABC News.

US District Judge David Bunning ordered her taken into custody, but said she could be released if she complies with the order to resume issuing licenses, the report said.
