DAMASCUS (Reuters) - Four people were killed and several others wounded when an Iranian missile struck a building in the southern Syrian city of Sweida on Saturday, the state news agency SANA said.

Other missile debris fell in the city of Quneitra and the Yarmouk Basin in Daraa province in southern Syria, according to Reuters witnesses and videos shared by residents.

The sounds of warplanes were heard repeatedly in the skies over Syria on Saturday, after the United States and Israel announced a military operation against Iran.

Dozens of interceptor missiles were seen in the skies over Damascus, according to two witnesses, one of them a Reuters reporter.

Earlier, Iran has launched missile attack against Israel after a “major combat operation” was commenced by the US and Israel on Saturday, pushing the Middle East into a renewed military confrontation and further dimming hopes for a diplomatic solution to Tehran's long-running nuclear dispute with the West.

According to reports, Iran launched a barrage of ballistic missiles and drones, which triggered air raid sirens across Israel under operation “Fateh Khyber”.

Iranian military officials confirmed the launch of numerous missiles and drones, which have struck key locations in Israel.

In addition to Israel, Iranian missiles were reported to have targeted several US bases in the Gulf region, including Saudi Arabia, Qatar, the UAE, and Bahrain.

Explosions were heard in Riyadh, Abu Dhabi, and Bahrain, where the American Navy's Fifth Fleet service center was reportedly hit.

The missile strikes in Bahrain have prompted the relocation of US diplomatic personnel to shelters.

In Qatar, Iranian missiles were reportedly intercepted in mid-flight, and Kuwait also reported hearing explosions.
