DUBAI (Dunya News) - Muslims in India and Bangladesh will begin observing Ramazan from Thursday (tomorrow) after authorities in both countries confirmed the sighting of the crescent moon, marking the start of the holy month of 1447 AH.

In Bangladesh, the National Moon Sighting Committee announced the beginning of Ramazan following a meeting held at the Islamic Foundation office at Baitul Mukarram National Mosque in Dhaka.

The committee confirmed that the crescent had been sighted and declared Thursday as the first day of fasting across the country.

In India, several media outlets reported crescent sightings from different regions, including confirmation by observers in Allahabad.

Local moon-sighting committees verified the reports after sunset, paving the way for the commencement of Ramazan on Thursday.

Ramazan, the ninth month of the Islamic lunar calendar, begins with the sighting of the new crescent moon.

Because the Islamic calendar is based on lunar cycles, each month lasts either 29 or 30 days depending on moon visibility, which can vary due to geographical and weather conditions.

As the lunar year is approximately 10 to 11 days shorter than the Gregorian calendar, Ramazan shifts earlier each year on the Western calendar.

During the holy month, Muslims fast daily from dawn to sunset, engage in increased prayers, charity, and spiritual reflection, and gather with family and community for iftar meals.

More than a billion Muslims worldwide observe Ramazan each year as a period of devotion, self-discipline, and compassion.
