Flash floods in southern India claim seven lives

Unexpected deluge in Tirupur region of Indias southern Tamil Nadu state claims seven lives.

Heavy rains resulted in overflowing of Rivers Sangilipallam and Jamunaipallam and also the countryside tanks in and around Tirupur, the hub of hosiery industry in Indias southern state of Tamil Nadu.Consequently, the floods claimed seven lives apart from submerging over 200 houses on Monday.The flooded roads and blocked sewers threw normal life out of gear.Briefing the mediapersons, the District Collector of Tirupur, M. Mathivanan said that all the four major tanks in the region were full to their capacity and this had created a major problem for the civic authorities.So already we have been receiving copious rains and we have four major tanks, which are full to the brim, added Mathivanan.According to him, the rescue team had till now recovered four bodies in these flash floods while another three people were still missing.So far we have recovered four bodies that is four casualties. And three persons are reported missing, said M Mathivinan, Collector, Tirupur.Later, he also commended the locals for not panicking and supporting the efforts of the police, fire brigade and civil defence teams in the rescue operations.The district administration has sounded red alert to warn the residents while efforts are in full swing to avert any further water flowing into low lying residential areas of the city.Also, the district administration is planning to conduct an anti-encroachment drive after the northeast monsoon is over this season since it is believed rampant encroachments and unauthorised constructions have hampered the network of sewer lines.
