Afghanistan could suffer a severe economic depression when allied troops leave in 2014.

A 51-page report from the Democrats on the Senate Foreign Relations Committee says the State Department and US Agency for International Development are spending about $320 million a month on foreign aid in Afghanistan. It said it is using the money to win hearts and minds. However, there is limited evidence that the stabilisation programmes are working. The report urged the Obama administration to take a closer look at how it spends its money in Afghanistan.
