Berlusconi undergoes jaw bone surgery

Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi underwent bone transplant surgery on Monday to repair damage to his jaw and teeth sustained when he was assaulted in 2009 by a man who threw a souvenir at him.

Berlusconi had complained earlier this month at a news conference that his work as prime minister meant he had no time to look after his health. He said that this was a big sacrifice and if he was a private citizen he would not have to put up with this. According to a statement the four-hour operation carried out in Milan was necessary to allow the premier to chew properly and move his jaw.Berlusconi received a broken nose, fractured teeth and gashed lips after being hit in the face by a spiked souvenir, a small model of the cathedral of Milan in December, 2009.
