Twenty-five dead in Senegal road accident
Twenty-five people died on Monday when a packed minibus and a bus collided in northern Senegal.
SAINT LOUIS (AFP) - Twenty-five people were killed on Monday when a packed minibus and a bus collided in northern Senegal, emergency services said.
The accident happened between Kebemer and Sagatta after the minibus set off from the coastal city of St. Louis, they said.
It was heading to the central city of Touba, taking people to an annual pilgrimage of the Mourides, a Sufi Muslim brotherhood.
The vehicle had an official capacity of 14 people but was carrying 27 at the time, 24 of whom were killed and the remaining three injured. The 25th fatality was the driver of the bus.
Six of the dead were members of the same family.
The state-run news agency APS, quoting hospital sources, said "at least" 25 people had died. About a dozen were wounded.
Senegal, which is known for its religious tolerance, has a population that is more than 90 percent Muslim, many of whom are members of brotherhoods that are highly influential politically and socially.
