RIYADH (Web Desk) - As heavy rains lashed Saudi Arabia, people were haunted by the memories of the 58-day long rainfall in the kingdom back in 1956.

The rains had caused immense devastation and damage as the valleys were flooded while houses, mosques and shops collapsed.

Termed as ‘the destructive year’, people were forced to leave their houses and sought shelter in high areas.

Besides, people make use of the rugs and carpets to protect themselves from rains.

The highly affected areas include Qassim, Sudair, Buraydah and neighboring cities and towns.

“In 1376 hijri (1956), rain fell in Qassim and lasted for five days in a row. It did not stop raining and rooftops began to collapse as a result,” Late Sheikh Ibrahim bin Obeid al-Abedulmohsen wrote in his book Time Incidents as reported by Al-Arabiya English.

“We estimate the number of houses which collapsed in Buraydah at 3,000. Wadi al-Rummah flooded and it only flooded when rainfall was very heavy,” he added.
