Scotlands response to Pak floods reaches half million pounds
The Scotlands response to devastating floods in Pakistan has hit its 500,000 pounds sterling target two weeks after the appeal was launched.More than 300,000 pounds sterling was raised at a dinner attended by British lower House of Commons Speaker John Bercow and Deputy First Minister Nicola Sturgeon at Glasgow Central Mosque yesterday. The funds will bring immediate relief and long term rehabilitation to Pakistan under two phases. Under Phase 1, the transportation of 2 million pounds sterling of medicines donated by International Health Partners as well as 10,000 sterilising tablets, 500 tubs of sterilising hand gels and 4,500 5-litre aqua packs, all donated by Scottish Water are being provided. In the follow up of Phase 2, the construction of Glasgow Village which will comprise 200 houses in Punjab will be initiated. Chair of UCare Foundation and ex-MP Mohammed Sarwar, who coordinated the appeal, said, we have seen tremendous generosity from the people of Glasgow which has meant that we have reached an initial target of 500,000 pounds sterling in just two weeks. More than 300,000 pounds sterling was raised at yesterdays fundraising dinner at Glasgow Central Mosque, including 15,000 pounds sterling from Glasgows Indian Community, 15,000 pounds sterling from the Kushi Foundation, 10,000 pounds sterling from Robert Wiseman Dairies. I am grateful to the Speaker of the House of Commons, John Bercow and Deputy First Minister Nicola Sturgeon who both spoke passionately about the urgent need to help the people of Pakistan. Also at the event was the leader of Glasgow City Council Gordon Matheson who has seconded economic advisers to the appeal.
