Three children were killed on Monday when explosives carried on a donkey cart in the troubled southern Afghan city of Kandahar detonated in a residential area. They were playing with the donkey cart, they had jumped on it (when it blew up outside his heavily-guarded home). Agha ran President Hamid Karzai's campaign during last year's presidential elections. He said five other people, including security guards outside his home, were also injured in the attack. The use of animals in insurgent attacks is rare but not unheard of. Kandahar, capital of the eponymous province, is a regular target of devastating insurgent attacks. It was the capital of the Taliban's brutal 1996-2001 regime, and is one of the most violent hubs of their insurgency. Police and army immediately sealed off the area in the centre of the city. Taliban-led insurgents regularly deploy crude bombs to attack government, military and civilian targets in their insurgency, now well into its ninth year.
