At least 10 people were killed when a bus crashed into a hillside in southeastern Peru.

LIMA (AFP) - At least 10 people were killed and 25 injured Thursday when a bus crashed into a hillside in southeastern Peru, the police said.

The crash on a road linking the provinces of Arequipa and Puno came just four days after 19 people were killed when their bus went off a precipice in the southern Huancavelica province.

The cause of the latest crash was not known.

Arequipa s chief of traffic police said many of the injured were in serious condition.

Deadly crashes are commonplace in Peru, where poorly maintained roads zig-zag up and down the towering Andes.

More than 4,000 people were killed in traffic accidents in 2012, according to official statistics.
