Syria: Dozens killed as violence surges

Dozens people were killed by Syrian troops that shelled and raided opposition areas.

Government attacks were reported in several cities and towns, including Homs, Hama and Dara’a.The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, an opposition group based in London, said at least 10 civilians were killed in the northern town of Sarmeen when troops fired on their bus as they tried to flee to Turkey.Reflecting the growing militarization of the conflict, rebels killed at least 12 soldiers in attacks on checkpoints and convoys on Thursday, the opposition group said.The Syrian government dismissed a United Nations Security Council statement calling for a cease-fire, and activists said it was impossible to carry out under current conditions.
