Omar Abdullah resigns over sex scandal allegations
Omar Abdullah, Chief of Indian Kashmir, submitted his resignation to the Governor on Tuesday, after an opposition lawmaker linked him with the list of those accused in the infamous sex scandal of 2006. Abdullah, the youngest Chief of the state, met Governor N. N. Vohra and submitted his resignation despite strong persuasions to the contrary by Kashmir's ruling National Conference. Local media reported that N. N. Vohra has accepted the resignation of Abdullah. Meanwhile, supporters of Omar Abdullah hailed him for his bold step. Omar Abdullah's resignation came shortly after Muzaffar Hussain Baig, a leader of Kashmir's main opposition People's Democratic Party, levelled the allegation against him. The scandal, in which girls, even minors, were said to have been supplied to politicians, bureaucrats, police officials, sparked weeks of violent protests across the Himalayan region in 2006 after it was uncovered. In 2006, the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI), the country's federal police probing the sex scandal, arrested two former state ministers and lawmakers but later freed them on bail. The scandal is still under investigation by the authorities.
