Scientists have discovered an ancient tomb believed to city of Lambayeque.
The tomb is thought to belong to a member of the elite and dates back around 900 years. It was found in the Chotuna-Chornancap area, 10 kilometres (six miles) from Lambayeque, in an area that is known for having ceremonial significance.Buried four metres underground, the tomb was unearthed after painstakingly careful work. The archaeology team working at the site knew that an elite figure from the era was buried somewhere in the area as they had already found the signs nearby, including a ceremonial throne, a small temple and the burial sites of some less important people.Archaeologist and Director of the Perus National Bruning Museum, Carlos Wester, explained how they discovered the crucial missing piece of the puzzle. Numerous items were found alongside the remains.More ornate finds - including a copper and silver stick and a chest plate with 21 copper bells - revealed that the deceased person was a member of the elite. The items will help researchers’ piece together information on burial traditions and they also hope to be able to work out more about the life of the clearly significant person.
