Loongson chip maker releases new-generation chips

The new-generation CPUs, Loongson 3A4000 and 3B4000, adopt a 28-nm processing technique.

BEIJING (Reuters) - China’s major chip maker "Loongson" released its new generation of general-purpose CPUs on Tuesday in Beijing.

The new-generation CPUs, Loongson 3A4000 and 3B4000, adopt a 28-nm processing technique and their main frequency reaches 1.8GHz to 2.0GHz. Also, their performances are more than twice that of the previous generation, according to Hu Weiwu, president of Loongson and also a researcher of the Institute of Computing Technology of the Chinese Academy of Sciences.

Hu said:"First, they use China’s own technology, which is in our control. All source codes of all modules are designed and written by ourselves. Also, they are safer and more reliable. We have integrated it with many security mechanisms. Traditionally, they were installed on motherboards, but now we place them in CPUs so that they can watch the operation system of CPUs more closely. As a result, the security of CPUs is greatly improved."

In the product launch, Lenovo, Sugon, China Academy of Launch Vehicle Academy released servers, cyber-security equipment, industrial control systems based on the new-generation processor of "Longson".

"The quick rise of domestic CPU has led to the fast development of the whole industry. The foundation of our information industry has been strengthened. We are creating a better future for the industry,"said Dong Dajian, deputy director of the Department of Information and Software Services of the Ministry of Industry and Information.

The products of "Loongson", which were incubated in the Institute of Computing Technology of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, have been widely used in government administration, astronomy, finance and energy industry. Statistics show that more than 500,000 processors were sold in 2019.

Hu also revealed that Loongson is taking steps to compete with international chip giants, adding that Loongson will launch new CPUs that adopt a 12 nm technique in 2020 and 2021. Their main frequency is expected to reach 2.5GHz, with the processing performance reaching world-class levels.
