Lleyton Hewitt advances in Sony Open
Lleyton Hewitt beat Sousa of Portugal 6-1, 7-6 (3) to reach second round of the Sony Open.
KEY BISCAYNE (AP) - Three-time Grand Slam winner Lleyton Hewitt advanced to the second round of the Sony Open by beating Joao Sousa of Portugal 6-1, 7-6 (3) on Wednesday.
Hewitt, the 32-year-old Australian who once topped the world rankings, made his first start in the event since 2009. The wild card is 91st in the world. He has been injured for much of the past three years, undergoing hip surgery and operations on his left foot.
Xavier Malisse of Belgium beat American qualifier Rajeev Ram 6-4, 6-7 (6), 6-4.
Russia s Svetlana Kuznetsova, the 2006 women s champion, beat Lourdes Dominguez Lino of Spain 6-3, 6-3.
