Barrister Raja and Senator Murtaza Kamran will jointly draft constitutional amendment
ISLAMABAD (Dunya News) – The Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) and Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam (JUI-F) have decided to jointly draft a constitutional amendment.
The development came to limelight after a meeting between a PTI delegation and JUI-F chief Maulana Fazlur Rehman here on Thursday which took stock of the country’s political affairs and the constitutional amendment.
The PTI delegation comprised Salman Akram Raja, Sahibzada Hamid Raza and Akhunzada Hussain.
JUI-F’s Senator Kamran Murtaza, who attended the meeting, later said the draft of the constitutional amendment had not yet been prepared.
According to sources, both the parties decided that Barrister Raja and Senator Murtaza would jointly draft the constitutional amendment agreed by the opposition.
Later speaking to media, Barrister Raja said "the Maulana is with us." He vowed that both the parties would not allow setting up of a "puppet" constitutional court.
He termed the way the government tried to pass the constitutional amendment mala fide.
Sahibzada Hamid Raza welcomed Maulana Fazlur Rahman's stance on the issue and expressed the hope that both parties would work out a joint draft [of constitutional amendment].
THE INSIDE STORY
According to sources, there was a detailed discussion on the issue of constitutional amendment in the meeting. The PTI delegation thanked the Maulana for his support and told him that the PTI founder appreciated his role for the constitution and democracy.
The PTI delegation said the purpose of the constitutional court was to favour an individual and crush the Tehreek-e-Insaf.
Sources said the PTI delegation was of the view that the constitutional court could be set up next month. "Attempt to pass the constitutional amendment in the present situation is mala fide," he added.
The Maulana assured the PTI delegation of his full support and said he would help the government advance its political agenda.
“I am with the opposition, and all decisions will be taken unanimously,” sources quoted him as saying.
According to sources, both the parties rejected transfer of judges of the high courts. The PTI delegation objected to the transfer and said that after the letter of the Islamabad High Court judges, the purpose of such amendment was to weaken the judiciary.
Sources said Senator Murtaza acknowledged the PTI delegation's objection and said such an amendment was mala fide in the current situation.
