18 more children die of pneumonia in Punjab, Lahore hit hard by outbreak
ISLAMABAD (APP) – The deadly pneumonia outbreak has claimed the lives of 18 more children in the Punjab province.
According to details, in the past 24 hours alone, a total of 869 pneumonia cases were reported across Punjab, with Lahore recording 177 new cases.
Since the onset of the disease, Punjab has documented 14,530 pneumonia cases, resulting in 258 deaths. In Lahore, approximately 2,490 pneumonia cases have been reported, leading to 53 deaths.
The recent surge in pneumonia-related deaths highlights a troubling trend, with over 60 children losing their lives in the past four days: 14 on Jan 24, 12 on Jan 25, 13 on Jan 26, and seven on Jan 27.
Health experts attribute the rise in pneumonia cases in Punjab to the prevailing winter season and the associated air pollution, particularly smog. Smog, a consequence of air pollution, has been identified as a significant factor contributing to the spike in pneumonia cases.
Pneumonia, characterised by an infection in the lungs, is predominantly caused by viral infections, and its symptoms can manifest after experiencing cold or flu. The severity of pneumonia can vary, with young children, especially those under five years old, being more susceptible to the disease.
